Thewlis stars as Wolves breeze past Hull

WARRINGTON Wolves shrugged off an admin hiccup to coast past struggling Hull FC 24-6 at the Halliwell Jones Stadium.

Sam Burgess was forced to lose one of his eight interchanges after naming Adam Holroyd in his starting team, despite the fact that the youngster, who signed a new contract extension this week, wasn’t named in their initial 21-man squad.

It mattered little though against a Hull side who announced the signing of Leigh captain John Asiata from next season in the build-up to the game, and have recently appointed former Wolves player Richie Myler as Director of Rugby.

It took 12 minutes for the deadlock to be broken, Matt Dufty putting Josh Thewlis over in the corner for the first of his hat-trick of tries.

Despite their run of defeats, Hull put up a fight for much of the first half and Warrington only added a further score when George Williams was sent over by Josh Drinkwater, in to the team in place of the injured Leon Hayes, sidelined long-term following injury in last week’s defeat at Salford.

Warrington built on that 12-0 half time lead within three minutes of the second half, Thewlis going in for his second try.

It was a busy night for Thewlis, having earlier spent some time on the sidelines for a concussion assessment, and when he converted his hat-trick try, he took his individual points tally for the match to 20 as Warrington led 24-0.

That proved to be the final points for the home side, though Tom Briscoe did add a consolation score for the visitors with 13 minutes to play.

Warrington are at home again next week against Hull KR.

Warrington: Dufty, Thewlis, King, Tai, Lindop, Williams, Drinkwater, Philbin, Walker, Vaughan, Nicholson, Fitzgibbon, Currie. Subs: Musgrove, Holroyd, Powell, Wood.
