Disabled access plan for Grade 2 Listed church

PLANNING permission is being sought to provide an access ramp for people with physical impairment and wheelchair users at the Grade 2 Listed St James’s Church, Latchford, Warrington.

Warrington Borough Council planning chiefs are considering the proposals which would provide an access ramp, with handrains at the main entrance to the church.
The existing steps would be removed to allow for building a platform to accommodate a new ramp and steps

Architects say the proposed ramp would have a minimum visual impact to the church building as it is relatively small – about 5m in length. Some minor landscape works would be carried out to provide access for maintenance and bin collection.
St James’s Church was built between 1829 and 1830 and is typical of a simple, early 19th century “Gothic” design.
The proposed access ramp and steps are designed to enhance and improve the building’s entrance and the overall image of the building. Red Ashlar Sandstone would be used to match the church stonework and the handrails would have an elaborate design to improve the appearance.
Overall, the proposal will have a positive impact on the church’s heritage value.
