Residents support riding school plan – but officers want it refused

PLANNING officers at Warrington are recommending a proposal to expand an existing riding school should be refused – despite 52 nearby residents supporting the scheme.
The scheme at Friends Lane Riding Centre, Penketh is also supported by Penketh Parish Council.
But five residents have lodged objections. They claim the development, which includes an indoor riding centre, will be harmful to the Green Belt and say the people supporting the scheme do not live nearby.
The applicants say about 300 riders are likely to attend the school each week – an increase of about 17 per cent on the existing usage.
At present, the school, which teaches carriage driving as well as horse riding, uses an outdoor ménage, fields around the school, and local roads.
But at times, the fields cannot be used because of drainage problems in wet weather.
The indoor riding centre would enable more lessons to take place.
Officers say the proposed indoor riding centre could be inappropriate in the Green Belt setting.
The application will be considered by Warrington’s development committee on Wednesday.
