Fire crews in two-hour operation to rescue cow from canal

TWO firefighters from Warrington were involved in a dramatic two-hour operation to rescue a cow from a canal.
They were members of the town’s water incident unit and were called to the incident at Church Road, Little Leigh, near Northwich.
Seven fire engines attended the incident including those from Warrington, Penketh and Lymm.
The drama began shortly before 7.30pm last night (Friday).on the Trent and Mersey Canal.
Crews found the cow in the water, calm and not distressed. A farmer was already at the scene.
The two Warrington firefighters – one in the water and the other on a raft – got into the canal. They were assisted by an animal rescue unit from Bollington who, working from the bank, used slings to get the animal out of the water with the help of farm machinery operated by the farmer.
In another incident last night, a fire crew from Warrington dealt with a large fire involving rubbish at Collins Green Lane, Burtonwood, Warrington. They used a hose reel jet and were at the scene for 45 minutes.
