Petrol stations targeted by clean air campaigners

PETROL stations across Warrington have been targeted by local members of Extinction Rebellion.
Warning labels were attached to almost 100 pumps at nine different petrol stations as part of a national campaign led by Doctors for Extinction Rebellion, calling for greater transparency about the damage caused to health by fossil fuels.
Graphic images on some of the labels imitate existing cigarette packet health warnings; the government’s “Stay Alert” coronavirus banners; and the wartime “Your country needs you” posters, with David Attenborough’s face replacing that of Lord Kitchener.
A spokesperson for Extinction Rebellion said: “Warrington in particular has air pollution issues with Parker St / Wilson Patten St having had some of the highest levels of Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2 ) in the country before lockdown.
“Chronic exposure to NO2 can cause respiratory effects including airway inflammation in healthy people and increased respiratory symptoms in people with asthma. “
The purpose of the action was to convey a clear and overdue health warning without disruption or confrontation. The stickers were placed prominently but were not designed to interfere with the buying of petrol.
