Planners want changes to shop front

OWNERS of a newly opened bistro restaurant in Stockton Health may be forced to make changes to the shop front if planners refuse to give it the go ahead.
Bosses at Le Pierre Bistro, on London Road, submitted a planning application after changes had already been made to the shop front, which sits within the Grade 2 Listed Victoria Building.
Wooden pilasters were placed on top of the existing brick mullions and stone plinth and the fascia was replaced when the restaurant moved in.
The Victoria Building dates back to the early 20th century and most of the units within it are used as restaurants and cafes.
Le Pierre Bistro sits in a part which is an early 21st century addition but it was designed to replicate the original features and materials of the building.
The conservation officer who looked at the plans raised concerns about a timber shop front being fitted over the existing brick façade and how the restaurant signage obscures architectural detailing that is fundamental to the buildings character.
Planners will argue that the shop front has a detrimental impact on the character and appearance of the building and the Stockton Heath Conservation area.
They’ll say the restaurant has been more concerned with meeting its parent company’s corporate style than fitting in with the building.
