Soap stars to open hospital lounge

STARS of Hollyoaks will open a new lounge for young people at Warrington Hospital today (Wednesday).
The Lounge is a chill out zone for youngsters aged 11 to 18 on the children’s ward. It will be officially opened by Matt Littler and Darren Jeffries, formerly Max and OB, on the Channel 4 soap.
A traditional playroom on the ward is designed for younger children but the new facility recognises the need for older children to be able to mix with other patients of their own age and have their own space.
The new room has been kitted out with a sofa, chairs and large floor cushions for relaxing. It has a 42 inch television, three computers (with restricted Internet access), Wii and assorted games including Guitar Hero.
Cameras in the room with a monitor on the nurses’ station allow controlled freedom and ensure patients’ safety.
It also means that youngsters have the space and ability to carry on their studies even though they are in hospital.
Jane Scott, children’s matron, said: “It is important to recognise that young people between the ages of 11 and 18 require their own space away from the younger children on the ward and The Lounge meets that need.
“It is a great facility just off the ward, where they can go and watch television, play on the Wii or surf the internet. By providing these facilities it also gives them the tools they require to fulfil homework commitments, whilst receiving treatment.”
