THE Mayor of Warrington marked the 75th anniversary of VJ (Victory over Japan) Day by laying a wreath at the town’s war memorial on Bridgefoot.
Cllr Wendy Johnson honoured the soldiers of World War II and remembered the contribution of Warrington people to the war efforts and was joined by the Mayoress, Beverley Hallam and the council’s Armed Forces Champion, Cllr Graham Friend.
The VJ Day commemorations – marking the day Japan surrendered, effectively ending the Second World War – takes place every year on 15 August.
The Mayor said: “It’s vital that we never forget the bravery of all those who fought in the Second World War. The 75th anniversary commemorations of VE Day and VJ Day have given us all the opportunity to honour our fallen soldiers and ensure their memory lives on.
“It was a privilege to lay a wreath at our beautifully-restored war memorial, as a symbol of our continued respect and gratitude for all those who sacrificed so much for us.”
Meanwhile to commerate #VJDay75 Warrington police officers took part in a two minute silence at Warrington cenotaph with members of the public.
