WARRINGTON residents clapped, cheered, sang and even played the bagpipes on the 10th and final “Clap for Carers” event.
A weekly institution since the end of March, Clap for Carers became a weekly ritual across the country, as residents and organisations turned out in force to show their appreciation for NHS and key workers during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The event was the idea of Annemarie Plas, who said tonight’s display of gratitude should be the last of its kind.
The creator a Dutch national living in South London, has been “overwhelmed” by the support but said it was better to stop when it was at “its peak”.
“I think it’s good to have the last of the series because to have the most impact I think it is good to stop it at its peak.”
She also had concerns it was becoming politicised.
“I think the narrative is starting to change and I don’t want the clap to be negative.”
So as Warrington turned out in force for one last time Thursday evenings at 8pm will never be quite the same, especially for Warrington Male Voice Choir’s Warren Davies and his neighbour Alison Benson who have been bursting into song each week – tonight they gave a rendition of “Help” by the Beatles.
Although there will be no surprises if some people don’t still show their appreciation for the NHS and key workers in other ways.
