Heavy snow warning for tonight

WARRINGTON Borough Council has issued a weather warning for tonight – with forecasts of more snow, sleet and cold weather.
The Met Office is forecasting heavy snow for the Warrington area around midnight.
A Town Hall spokeswoman said: “All council services, including bin collections, are currently running as normal and we will issue updates regarding any major changes.
“We have 300 tonnes of salt in stock to deal with the forecast snow. It is likely that we will have to use 120-180 tonnes of salt depending on the severity of the snow.
“Our five gritters will be out this afternoon to pre-grit the main roads. They will then be re-loaded with salt and the snow ploughs are in readiness for any snow later today and tomorrow.
“Grit bins are full and should be used on the roads and footways in the immediate area where they are located.”
But the council is warning motorists that it will not be possible to plough and grit all roads.
The spokeswoman added: “If you have to make a journey when snow or extremely cold weather is forecast, make sure you have warm clothes, food, water, boots, a torch and spade, and let someone know when you expect to arrive and your route. Try to travel on the main roads as much as possible.
“Adjust your driving to suit the conditions. Black ice isn’t always visible and so can be an even greater hazard for both motorists and pedestrians.
“Be careful when walking or driving on compacted snow – it may have turned to ice.”
The council also stress that even after roads have been treated, driving conditions may remain challenging, especially on stretches of road where there is a greater risk of side winds or of ice forming.

  1. I thought that given the state of the roads and traffic, that driving conditions were always challenging in Warrington.

PS. Thanks for the warning though.

  2. According the the weather forcasts today and the met office weather site we aren’t likely to get much snow at all and any we do get will not settle and is to be followed by more rain…….. temperatures not down to freezing either which is good news as it’s rather wet outside ………………………………………….. saying the forcasters may be wrong again eh
