OFFICERS from the public protection department at Warrington Borough Council are urging people to sign up to a scheme which could help stop rogue traders in their tracks.
The iCAN scheme is a consumer alert network which exists to warn members about the latest consumer rip offs that have hit town.
Members can receive a text message or voicemail update if a suspicious character has been spotted knocking on doors or operating in their neighbourhood. And they can let the network know if they spot a trader who needs to be reported.
The Trading Standards initiative is being pushed by the environment department at Warrington Council, which has expanded into a larger remit of “public protection”.
Philip Ramsden, principle environmental health officer said the department now looked after a range of services.
He said: “We’re involved in hundreds of services from noise pollution to drainage. More recently we’ve been working with social care departments and agencies like Trading Standards, to make sure we have a co-ordinated approach.
“There are 2,400 members of the iCAN network in Warrington now – it would be great to get that figure up to 5,000.”
