Charity seeks abseil volunteers

A WARRINGTON-based charity is looking for volunteers with a head for heights to abseil down the outside of the ventilation shaft of the Mersey Tunnel.
The “Mega-Mersey Abseil”, organised by the Warrington base of Christian Aid, will take place on Saturday, February 27 and will help raise funds for poor communities in the developing world.
Warrington is a key headquarters for Christian Aid -its local office covers the whole of the North West, from Crewe to Carlisle. The charity has just appointed Loretta Minghella, (pictured) sister of the late film director Anthony, as its new director from April.
Dave Hardman, senior regional co-ordinator for Christian Aid in Warrington said: “The new director is coming into post at a very challenging time. With the recession, fundraising has become more difficult yet the world’s poor are in more need than ever.
“There are several local Christian Aid groups in and around Warrington who are involved in all sorts of fundraising activities in Christian Aid week and all year round.”
Traditional house-to-house collections are still a vital part of Christian Aid’s fundraising, but there are other ways people can raise money to help those in need.
“The Envelope and Beyond…” event is a chance for people to find out more about Christian Aid and the work it does and will take place at Bold Street Methodist Church from 10am until 1.30pm on Saturday February 6.
Anyone interested in attending “The Envelope and Beyond” or taking part in the Mega Mersey Abseil, can get more details from the Warrington office by emailing [email protected] or calling 01925 573769.
