WORK is to start soon on a project to improve access to the historic Sankey Canal at Warrington.
The project is in line with the recommendations of a recreational study undertaken by the borough council and the Environment Agency.
Fiddlers Ferry Marina will be linked to the canal close to the Warrington boundary with Widnes, giving proving users with better access to the canal for recreation and leisure purposes.
Coun Alan Litton, the borough council’s executive member for environment and transport, (pictured) said: “These improvement works will contribute directly to the delivery of the ambitions and recommendations of the study and more importantly will revitalise this tired and neglected section of the canal.”
A further £20,000 funding contribution to the Sankey Canal project is to be provided by the Environment Agency and an additional grant has been secured from Waste Recycling Group Ltd, administered by WREN, who have awarded £50,000 towards planned improvements, facilities and attractions for visitors.
Work is expected to start at the end of the month and will seek to recreate open water sections within the canal, providing new wildlife habitats.
New canal side platforms and new seating will result in more opportunities for angling, water sports and numerous educational activities while also improving the adjoining section of the Trans-Pennine Trail.
A project working group has been formed to help the council develop and deliver the project and includes direct support and contributions from the the Sankey Canal Restoration Society (SCARS), Dallam and district Community Angling Group, Fiddlers Ferry Power Station and the Environment Agency.
