WARRINGTON endured gridlock again during the rush hour period and into the evening following a collision which resulted in the closure of the M62 near Warrington.

The incident involved an overturned car from which a woman, who suffered serious head injuries, had to be freed by firefighters.

The road was closed in both directions while the air ambulance was allowed to land.

The eastbound carriageway has since reopened, but the westbound carriageway remained closed while investigation work was carried out.

The M62 J9 westbound access (Winwick / Warrington) was also closed for Carriageway Lane Management with normal traffic conditions expected between 23:00 and 23:15 on 4 February.

The M62 J8 westbound access (Burtonwood) was also closed due to the Overturned Vehicle with normal traffic conditions expected between 21:30 and 21:45 on 4 February.

A stranded vehicle on the M6 near Warrington caused further traffic issues as more traffic diverted through Warrington.

The delays also resulted in a delayed kick off kick-off for Liverpool v Shrewsbury in the FA Cup replay at Anfield.

More than 8,000 Shrewsbury fans were travelling to the game.
