Most schools to re-open on Monday

THE majority of schools in Warrington will either be open, or hope to be open, on Monday.
But the borough council is urging parents to check school websites before their children set off.
Some schools will still be closed.
Evelyn Street Primary will stay closed due to a lack of heating. Foxwood Special School will also be closed.
Sandy Lane Nursery and Children’s Centre at Orford will be closed on Monday, but hopes to be open on Tuesday.
Barrow Hall Primary is making its decision on Sunday morning and asking parents to check their website.
Brook Acre Primary, St Anne’s CE Primary and Woolston CE Primary are all delaying their decision and proposing to post the latest news on their websites.
All high schools will be at lease partially open and both Warrington Collegiate and Priestley College plan to be open.
But all schools are warning parents to be wary of the condition of access roads and footpaths near schools.
The council’s five gritters have been out continuously gritting and snow ploughing the main A routes, a Town Hall spokeswoman said.
The team has gritted more than 45 times – often twice a night.
The spokeswoman said: “In a typical winter season we would grit about 40 times. In previous years we would have gritted on average 20 times at this point in the year from the beginning of the season. This time last year we had gritted 36 times since the start of the season
“Since the arrival of the cold weather the week before Christmas, the council have used in excess of 2,000 tonnes of salt. In a typical winter season only 1,200 tonnes in total would be used
“The arrival of snow has made the job even harder. Usually the gritter only needs to cover a road once, however when it snows the routes take twice as long because the gritters and ploughs need to go back in the other direction to clear the snow and spread the grit across the lanes.”
The council’s street scene and refuse collectors are working with the gritting crews.

  1. Could someone please explain to me why I have only seen one gritter in action all through the cold spell despite being out on the roads myself every day and why not one bit of grit has been put on Grappenhall Road from Stockton heath to Lymm which is a main road!

The council’s gritting has been a joke and I suspect this report is not factually correct!

  2. You’ve seen one more gritter than me this week! Cherry Lane, the main road from Lymm up to the M6, has not even been touched. Presumably this is because it is “only a B road” despite it being one of the most heavily travelled roads in the area.

  3. Westbrook Crescent is terrible and a bus route too, lots of the roads around here are in an awful state. I have seen one gritter in a week. Typical council inadequacy….

  4. Ditto – not seen a single gritter around roads in Thelwall/Grappenahll/Lymm – went in to town this morning on the A50 and A57 and the roads clearly hadn’t been gritted overnight – they were treacherous. Am wondering if we all get a council tax rebate for uncollected refuse and ungritted roads. . . no, thought not!!!

  5. Had to drive to Callands last night….. my god the roads are attrocious; and these are all bus routes! If the highways agency IS responsible for the A Roads, exactly what have our gritters been gritting??

  6. Still not been gritting the roads round Stockton Heath that’s for sure. Not used my car for a week but just been out in it and many of the roads are now turning to glass ice !!!!

Considering all the schools are opening again tomorrow you would have thought they WOULD have treated the roads by now !!!!!!!
