Conservatives claim “unprecedented” growth in membership

A SENIOR Conservative at Warrington has hailed an “unprecedented” surge in new party members across the borough.

Paul Campbell, chairman of the Warrington Conservatives federation, said the recruitment of new members was like nothing he has seen in almost two decades of local party involvement.

The federation, which covers both the Warrington North and Warrington South constituencies, said it had enjoyed a successful 2019 including Andy Carter regaining Warrington South, Wendy Maisey turning the previous safe Labour seat of Warrington North into a marginal seat along with the doubling of membership numbers through the year.

Warrington Conservatives were praised for their efforts with an award at the party’s Cheshire and Wirral annual dinner.

Mr Campbell said: “This has been a great team effort and reflects the political change and mood in Warrington. In over 30 years, I’ve never seen an increase in membership like this. It’s unprecedented.”
Wendy Maisey, Warrington Conservatives deputy chairman political, said: “Across the two constituencies in Warrington, more people voted Conservative than any other party in the December 2019 General Election and I’m not surprised out membership is at the highest level ever.”
