YOUNGSTERS in Warrington will have something to smile about when they visit the dentist.
A scheme to paint their “pearly whites” with a fluoride varnish to help prevent tooth decay is going from strength to strength.
NHS Warrington has provided 21 dentists with the special varnish, which is recommended by the Department of Health. Evidence suggests it can reduce decay by 30 to 40 per cent in the children when used regularly.
The programme started over a year ago – now specially trained dental nurses can apply fluoride varnish provided that it has been prescribed by a dentist.
Kerry Davis, acting primary care lead for NHS Warrington said: “Our local dentists have responded positively to using fluoride varnish.
“Within 12 months of the scheme starting, high street dentists working in Warrington are using fluoride varnish twice as often as dentists in the Northwest and five times more frequently than the ‘average’ dentist in England.”
Something to smile about!
