A VACANCY has been declared in the Burtonwood and Winwick ward of Warrington Borough Council following the death of former council leader Terry O’Neill.
A date has been set for a by-election for February 6 and nominations must be in by 4pm on January 10.
But it  will only be held if more than one candidate comes forward.
Cllr O’Neill had been a member of the borough council for 28 years and had been leader of the council since 2011, when Labour took control of the authority. He died, aged 72, in October following a short illness.
If a contest takes place, it would come only three months before the all-out council elections due to take place in May.
The Burtonwood and Winwick ward is normally regarded as a Labour stronghold.
At the council elections in 2016, the results in the ward, where e two seats were up for grabs, were as follows:
Cathy Mitchell (Labour): 1083; Terry O’Neill (Labour) 1065; Robin Sloan (Conservative) 399; Timothy Muttock (Liberal Democrat) 265.
