Water expert's mission to Nigeria

A WATER expert from Warrington has been on a mission to Nigeria to help officials get the country’s burgeoning water industry flowing.
Mark Smith, 27, a business analyst for water company United Utilities, spent two weeks in the baking hot Anambra province of South East Nigeria, advising officials and engineers on how to develop the region’s water industry.
In many areas, clean drinking water can only be obtained from water vendors – whose prices are unaffordable for many people.
The trip was part of UK programme called Partners for Water and Sanitation (PfWS), which aims to improve access to safe water and sanitation for people in developing African nations.
Mark, from Birchwood, found himself working in conditions far removed from his day job. He was met at the region’s airport by a police cavalcade, and was accompanied by bodyguards throughout his stay, to ensure his protection. Despite the drama, the trip proved to be a hugely rewarding experience.
He said: “Improving the region’s water infrastructure is essential for the health of millions of residents, so people were desperate to learn.
“Every workshop I hosted was packed, and delegates were full of questions.
“I was amazed by the dedication of many of the people I met. Some of them hadn’t been paid for two years, yet kept turning up for work everyday because they believed so passionately in what they were doing. It was a real privilege to share my knowledge with them.”
Mark has since produced a report for the region’s officials, containing his recommendations for the strategic development of the water industry.
Tracy Monckton, partnership manager for United Utilities said: “We are extremely proud of Mark’s contribution to Nigeria’s water industry. Clean, safe and reliable drinking water is something we take for granted. This trip was a great opportunity to share the company’s expertise with a nation that is striving to develop a modern water network.”
