Jekyll and Hyde Town!

WARRINGTON Town continued their Jekyll and Hyde season, as they crashed out of the Liverpool Senior Cup, at home to lower league Bootle, three days after beating runaway league leaders Curzon Ashton.
The defeat ended Warrington’s interests in any cups for the 2009-10 season and also lost the club the opportunity of a money spinning glamour clash against Liverpool or Everton.
The game started cagily, with both sides testing the other out early on. Town went close to scoring early on, when Jimmy McCarthy’s free kick was touched onto the post by centre half Levi Kennedy, followed by the visitors striker Anthony Hickey forcing Town Keeper Richie Mottram into a fine save.
Mottram was back in action soon after, this time to deny Hickey’s strike partner Daniel O’Connor, with a one handed save to push the ball over the bar.
Town went close to going ahead shortly afterwards when Bootle defender John Martin almost sliced a Phil Hadland cross into his own net. Town did have the ball in the net through Dave Roberts, but the linesman had raised his flag for offside.
The last chance of the half fell to the visitors, but Kennedy was on hand to block the effort on Mottram’s goal.
Bootle came out and started the second half brightest, going close in the 47th minute, when a quick free kick forced Mottram into a scrambling save, however, the pressure told and the visitors took the lead in the 50th minute, when Hickey was on hand to beat defender Mike Grogan to the rebound after Mottram had saved O’Connor’s initial close range effort to tap into the unguarded net.
Town started to search for an equaliser, but were unable to really get into the game, Richie Chetcuti, (pictured top) blasting over the bar. Town started to push forward in the last 20 minutes. Grogan, (pictured right) now pushed into midfield, saw his cross cum shot saved by Bootle keeper Mike Mawdsley and despite the pressing, Town were incapable of finding an equaliser to take the game into extra time. It should have been 2-0 deep into injury time, when Mottram denied Robbie Hardwick, with a save with his legs, after the midfielder was through on goal.
Prior to kick off Warrington were presented with the Unibon League Fair Play Award for the second consecutive month.

Unibond League representative John Beaumont (right) is pictured presenting the award to Town’s Management team (L-R) Manager Joey Dunn, kitman/conditioner James Standing and assistant manager Stuart Humphries.
Warrington return to league action on Saturday when they entertain Woodley Sports at Cantilever Park, kick off 3pm as they continue to push for a play off spot.
