ROYAL Mail’s giant sorting office at Warrington is to be given a £1.5 million refurbishment to kick-start a £300 million construction programme at postal depots across the country.
McLaren Construction has won the first contract let under the deal which covers new build and refurbishment work over a four-year period.
Work will start at the letter sorting office at Orion Boulevard, Great Sankey later this month.
It is due for completion next Spring with McLaren confident the job will be the first of many under the framework deal.
The Warrington centre opened about 10 years ago and now handles mail from across the region.
McLaren was confirmed in September as one of seven contractors to win a place on the four-year framework deal which covers new build and refurbishment work on mail centres, delivery offices, regional distribution centres, workshops and depots.
The company recently opened an office in Warrington as part of its strategic growth in the north of England.
McLaren chairman Kevin Taylor said: “This framework will provide a steady stream of work for us over the next four years at least and is indicative of our strategy of targeting new areas as the construction market continues to evolve. It also fits perfectly with our ambition to win more work in the north of England through the new Warrington office.”
The seven contractors on the framework are McLaren, John Sisk & Son, Longcross Construction, Mace, Miller, Volker Fitzpatrick and Wates.
Latest figures posted at Companies House show McLaren made an operating profit of £15.5 million on the back of £130 million turnover for the year to July 2008. Turnover this year is expected to hit £160 million.
