RESIDENTS of Warrington are getting a better service thanks to a training programme for borough councillors.
The elected member training and development programme, designed by councillors for councillors, has improved the way that they and officers work together. It offers councillors the chance to build their knowledge and skills using the latest technology, which means they are better equipped to deal with decision making, scrutiny requirements and partnership arrangements.
The council achieved a member development charter last year and is one of a handful in the North West to achieve exemplar status. The programme also received praise in this year’s prestigious public sector MJ Awards 2009.
Coun Keith Bland, deputy leader and chairman of the councillor development forum, said: “The key to our success has been the ability of all politicians from all parties to work together to bring about improvements for the benefit of the community and town we serve. We have also benefited from support from our officers who increasingly work alongside us in a positive and proactive way.
“Furthermore, we have also been asked to undertake some research work with Manchester University relating to the demands on councillors’ time and help mentor other local authorities going through the same process, which is a great honour.”
