TWO men with a combined age of 124, ran to victory in the veteran’s section of an annual mountain marathon in Elan Valley, Wales.
Stuart Baird and Barry Clayton, of Lymm took part in the Original Mountain Marathon, which was founded 40 years ago, and boasts Sir Ranuph Fiennes among previous entrants.
The two men admit their combined ages but Barry’s wife Ann said: “No-one’s admitting how the figure is arrived at!” They surged to victory by a margin of seven minutes.
The event was founded as a two day mountain, orienteering event, incorporating two consecutive marathons of 26 miles over height gains up to 8,000 feet. It draws competitors from a wide area.
Entrants compete as a team of two for safety reasons and carry all their gear necessary for the weekend. The location is kept secret until August to prevent training in the area.
The two Lymm veterans trained hard and were thrilled with their success in first place of the Veteran’s handicap.
