Schoolgirls are lifesavers!

TWO Warrington schoolgirls have been

hailed as lifesavers after helping rescue a pensioner who fell in her

own home breaking her leg in two places and losing five pints of blood.
Year 11 Culcheth High School pupils Helen Sheridan-Smith aged 15 and Cathryn McCorkindale, 16, have been helping local resident Joan Taylor every Monday evening by walking her dog.
The girls are part of Culcheth High School Community Programme which encourages young people to play an active role in their local area.
Alarm bells rang when Mrs Taylor didn’t answer her door after they had knocked several times. Instead of walking away, they waiting and listened and could just make out Mrs Taylor’s faint cries for help, asking them to fetch a neighbour.
Once the neighbour and the girls were inside the house they could see Mrs Taylor had fallen downstairs and was seriously injured. She had suffered a double fracture of the leg and lost five pints of blood.
Mrs Taylor was rushed to hospital for urgent treatment. Her injuries are taking a long time to heal but she is on the road to recovery and is now in high spirits and was able to receive a visit from the schoolgirls, who still take her pet for a walk and thank them in person for their help.
She was thrilled to see them again and said: “I owe my life to these girls. I’m delighted they are still walking Jack. It has been a shock for him to not have me around the house but apparently he responds very well to them.”
Culcheth High School headteacher, Martyn Froggett, said “I am delighted with how the girls responded to this emergency situation.
“While it was a case of being in the right place at the right time for Helen and Cathryn, is an excellent advert for young people offering help to the community and it shows one of the benefits of such a programme.”
