YOUNG footballers and rugby players at Culcheth are appealing to dog-walkers – to help them clean up their games.
They are sick and tired of having to clear dog dirt from the Shaw Street playing fields before they can play matches.

Stephen Doody, of Croft, whose son James plays for Culcheth Eagles RL Club, said: “There are three pitches at Shaw Street – two rugby and one soccer.
“They all suffer from the dog dirt problem. We have to take shovels and bin sacks to the match and walk the pitch removing the mess.
“One recent match was due to kick-off at 10.30am and couldn’t start until 11am because of the state of the pitch.
“There has been a problem for some time, but recently it has got worse.
“We see people bringing their dogs to the field in cars and then letting them have a run, so it is not really local people who are causing the problem.
“But we would appeal to dog-walkers not to use the sports pitches.
“It is not just a nuisance or an inconvenience – it’s also a health risk. Dog dirt can cause serious health problems, particularly for young children.”

Well said Mr Doody! A more responsible attitude from the dog walkers in always cleaning up after their beloved pet is the way forward. I’m sure they wouldn’t want their dogs prohibited from being on the recreation fields ‘cos that’s what will happen if this irresponsible behaviour continues. The council have provided 2 red dog dirt bins around the field and still not everyone is using them!
