WARRINGTON Wolves’ torrid run of form ahead of next weekend’s trip to Wembley continued as they were soundly beaten 20-6 at Wigan.
While the Challenge Cup final does give the chance for some silverware, it’s hard to see how the Wolves will get anywhere near opponents St Helens after recent weeks.
Not only that, but a fifth straight league defeat, and a seventh in nine games, leaves their chances of reaching another Super League Grand Final at Old Trafford looking less likely by the week.
The damage was done in this one by half time, with Wigan racking up an 18-0 lead which in truth could have been more, and would have been had a last ditch Ben Currie tackle not dislodged the ball from a try line bound Bevan French.
French had already got on the board with a try in the corner after Zak Hardaker’s opener, while NRL-bound George Williams dummied his way through a lovely mid-range score.
Although Warrington did score the only try of the second half, and had a couple of Dec Patton efforts contentiously ruled out, it was another worrying performance by Steve Price’s out of sorts team, who couldn’t even use the excuse of being under strength, having brought back several of their big hitters for this one.
Having occupied second spot in the table for much of the season, Warrington will be displaced if Hull can get a result against Salford on Saturday.
Perhaps more ominously than that is that this result means last year’s champions Wigan now move level on points with Warrington, when they had been a remarkable 16 points back when the Wolves got the better of them at the Magic Weekend at Anfield back in May.
