Historic Town Hall to be checked for asbestos

WARRINGTON’S historic Town Hall – Grade 1 listed and one of the top 2.5 per cent of listed buildings in the country – is to be investigated to see if asbestos is present in the structure.
The work is necessary because of the need to upgrade the building’s aging fire alarm system.
But first the borough council’s own development management committee must give permission for both projects to go ahead.
Built in 1750, the building was originally the home of industrialist Thomas Patten.
The asbestos survey is necessary to determine the location, type and condition of any asbestos which might be in the building.
A specialist company, which has carried out work for the council before, will carry out the survey.
Sampling will be confined to areas of the building where work to install the fire alarm system will be carried out.
Any damage caused to the fabric of the building will be made good using traditional methods and materials.
In a report to be considered by the committee next week, officers say they are satisfied the fabric of the town hall, and its east and west annexes, will be protected.
The work will have no effect on the Conservation Area in which the Town Hall stands.
