Climate Change protestors stage demo outside Town Hall

A DOZEN or more protestors gathered outside Warrington’s Golden Gates to mark their demand for climate change action.
The protesters, led by Warrington’s newly formed local Extinction Rebellion group, held up banners and placards reminding passers-by that we only have one planet and there is no Planet B – and that governments need to act now.
Dozens of passing motorists – including a bus driver – showed their support by tooting their horns, and giving thumbs up signs.
Paul Sheeky, the leader of the Warrington XR Group said, “We are here today because we are running out of time. Most people don’t understand the seriousness of the situation, but we need to act now.
Green Party member Lyndsay Mcateer joined the protest to show solidarity for demands for climate change action.
She said: “Climate issues have been marginalised for far too long.
“Warrington Borough Council declared a climate emergency but have taken no concrete steps nor introduced any significant measures to make Warrington carbon neutral by 2030. There are plans in place now to destroy huge swathes of Green Belt in the Warrington area, which is completely contrary to what we need to be doing to deal with the climate emergency.”
Alan Storton from Warrington referred to the recent extreme weather events and said he was concerned for his grandchildren.
Diane Porter from Lymm added, “The seriousness of climate change cannot be overstated. It affects us all. We would like the government to meet its climate change obligations transparently and to show leadership on this issue.”
Extinction Rebellion meets in Warrington every second Tuesday. To find out more, email: [email protected]

  1. I remember my Geography teacher describing the natural climate change 50 years ago – I don’t think he’d have ever imagined that we’d be in the dire straights that we are now in all done by all of us – we’ve gone blindly down the slippery slope not giving a dam about anything only ourselves so we reap the rewards now and can’t really complain can we? WE are now experiencing that predicted natural climate change with the man made one of top.
