BUSINESSES in Warrington will benefit as an eco-action plan tackles climate change and promises to secure more than 1,100 jobs.
The 30-point plan has been drawn up by Cheshire and Warrington Economic Alliance (CWEA) working closely with the Cheshire and Warrington Climate Change Group and a network of private, public and community sector organisations.
It includes tactics to improve energy efficiency in public sector buildings, make sure that procurement policies favour local suppliers and suggests improved transport links to tourist attractions.
The plan also hopes to develop local skills in installing energy efficient measures and enable local businesses to access resource efficiency support from Groundwork Cheshire.
It aims to move Warrington towards a low-carbon economy and follows an earlier report commissioned by CWEA called “The Economic Impacts of Climate Change in Cheshire and Warrington” which identified how Climate Change could create economic opportunities.
Kate Radford, climate change programme manager at CWEA, said: “Climate Change is a very broad topic covering energy, water, waste and transport issues as well as how we adapt to future changes in our climate.
“This action plan will give us a focus for our activities. If your company, community or organisation would like to be involved please get in touch.”
The Climate Change Programme in Cheshire and Warrington is funded by the North West Development Agency (NWDA) to help meet the objectives of the North West Climate Change Action Plan.
Mark Hughes, executive director of economic development, North West Development Agency (NWDA) said: “At the heart of the NWDA’s work is the ambition to achieve stable economic conditions for the North West, while at the same time minimising the dangers associated with Climate Change.
“The Cheshire and Warrington Climate Change Action Plan is a prime example of how the region is responding to this threat, focusing on adaptation and mitigation.”
The action plan and earlier reports are available to download on CWEA’s website at www.cwea.org.uk/publications.
