Handyman service wins £120,000 grant

A WARRINGTON advisory service has received a £120,000 Government grant to provide additional free or low cost repairs on its service users’ homes.
Warrington Home Information and Improvement Agency (WHIA) will use the funding to help those over 60, or younger with a disability – where there is a safety, security or health risk within their home.
The non-profit advisory service can now extend and improve its “handyperson” service thanks to funding obtained through its partnership with Warrington Borough Council.
WHIA already employs a team of five handymen for general repairs but is now able to extend its support to plumbing and electrical jobs. A young apprentice from Warrington has joined the team to gain skills and experience, and will assist with completing the 1,200 jobs WHIA has set out for its first year.
Pauline Scottson, from Old Hall who has used the service, said: “Having the jobs done by the handyperson has made such a difference not just to my life but to my daughters’ lives too. I can’t praise WHIA enough for introducing this service – it’s a great help.”
The handyman service works with reputable local businesses and is helping improve housing standards.
WHIA manager Geraldine Kiddle said: “We are delighted to launch the handyperson service.
“We believe the home environment is crucial to our general health and well being and it is our aim to provide a solid care and repair service to those who need it living in Warrington.”
WHIA, provided by Warrington Housing Association, is attracting more people to its service. It also provides impartial advice to those who need it.
Anyone who wants information on its services can contact WHIA on 01925 246 812, visit www.whia.org.uk or visit its office at The Gateway, Sankey Street.
