MP backs campaign for reform of Pension Credit

WARRINGTON North MP Helen Jones is a backing a campaign calling for the reform of Pension Credit to put more money in older people’s pockets.
The campaign has been launched by Independent Age – an advice service for older people – who claim 1.3 million eligible people are not receiving Pension Credit.
Ms Jones said: “The campaign is calling on the Government to make sure that everyone who is entitled to Pension Credit receives it. Currently, in my constituency, £4,629,000 million of Pension Credit is not reaching older people each year.
“Pension Credit can transform lives, allowing people to live with dignity and independence. It can make the weekly shop affordable, help pay essential bills or enable people to take part in social activities, reducing the risk of loneliness and poor mental and physical health.
“The Government has failed, in the past 10 years, to increase take-up for Pension Credit beyond 63 per cent. They could start by simplifying the application process.
“If the campaign’s targets are met those eligible would be, on average, £49 a week better off.”
Independent Age wants to see at least 75 per cent of eligible people receiving Pension Credit by the end of 2020, at least 95 per cent by the end of 2022 and 100 per cent by 2025.
