TWO local venues have been awarded “excellent” in the Warrington Food Award hosted by the borough council.
Warrington Hospital and Houghton Hall both made the grade in the awards made by the council’s Food Safety Team.
It recognises high standards in food safety and the inclusion of healthy nutritional choices on menus, and takes into account the use of Fair Trade products.
The prestigious awards were presented by the Mayor and Mayoress of Warrington Coun Brian Axcell and Dr Irina Axcell, during a celebration at the Town Hall.
Warrington Hospital’s catering manager Steve Miller also attended. He said the award recognises the hospital catering department’s high standards of food safety which is monitored by a hazard analysis system. This covers food preparation, storage, production, temperature control and high standards of cleanliness and personal hygiene.
He said:”The menu’s for our patients offer a wide range of dishes with a number of healthy choices available including fresh fruit, vegetables, soups, wholemeal bread, low fat spreads and many dishes containing low levels of fat and salt. This is supplemented by beverages from fair trade sources.
Houghton Hall’s matron, Louise Meikle said: “Good food can have a huge impact on our health and it can be a key factor in motivating people and helping them recover from an illness. In this respect our catering staff are as much a part of the team as the nurses and therapists.”
More than 50 awards were presented at the ceremony at Warrington Town Hall.
Coun Roy Smith, the borough council’s executive member for health and wellbeing, said: “I would like to congratulate all of the organisations that have won an award this year.
“This shows an impressive level of commitment to achieving high standards in food safety and also in offering their customers healthy eating choices.”
Any organisations interested in gaining a Food Award should contact the council’s food safety team on 01925 442577.
