WARRINGTON reflected the mood of much of the country as Nigel Farage’s new Brexit Party swept to victory in the European Parliament election vote in the town, with the pro-remain Lib Dems coming second.
Formed just six weeks ago the new Brexit party secured 17,830 votes in the leave town, with the Liberal Dems coming second with 11,472, followed by Labour with 9,534.
The Green Party came fourth with 6,629 followed by the Conservatives with 4,634, UKIP with 2,111, Change UK – The Independent Group, 1,834, Tommy Robinson, 1,162, English Democrats, 358, UK European Union Party, 240 and Mohammad Aslam 52.
A total of 409 ballot papers were rejected and turnout was 35.57 per cent.
The Warrington result, which was added to other results in the North West was declared by Warrington Borough Council chief executive Steven Broomhead last night at Birchwood Leisure and Tennis Complex.
As a result the Brexit Party won three seats in the north west, with Labour and the Liberal Democrats two each and the Green Party one.
Claire Fox, Henrik Nielsen, and David Bull were elected for Brexit Party, Theresa Griffin and Julie Ward for Labour, Chris Davies and Jane Brophy for the Liberal Democrats and Gina Dowding, Green Party.
