VIPs to spend a day in prison

LOCAL VIPs and a well-known celebrity will spend a day “in prison” in Warrington to raise funds for charity tomorrow (Saturday).
Inspector Gary McIntyre and his team at Stockton Heath Police Station have agreed to stage a Sponsored Jail Break between 10am and 12noon.
Guest prisoners will be arrested, “charged” and locked up in the cells or on the “prison ship” and only release when bail is secured (by mobile).
The event is organised by local charity the Canal Boat Adventure Project’s Nessie Club to raise funds for a roof on an education project in Ghana.
The Nessie Club is a canal boat-based social inclusion project for young people from Halton and Warrington, enabling youngsters to overcome barriers and achieve their potential.
Since it was set up in 2001 almost 1,000 young people have overcome educational, health and cultural deprivation to achieve university or careers. Some of these have gone on to volunteer in Ghana, Peru and South Africa.
Young people from the project have already helped those in Ghana by supplying 120 computers, 32 reconditioned bicycles and education resources. The Ghana Education Service is taking on responsibility for the building.
Norma Hornby, volunteer manager of the Canal Boat Adventure Project, said: “I very much hope that local schools, shops and services will support this event because the whole process has improved the life-chances of our own young people through learning as wells as their new Ghanaian friends.”
During the year local schoolchildren and groups have raised funds towards the foundations and walls of the building, and it is hoped the sponsored jail break will raise enough funds for the roof. Warrington Rotary Club and Frodsham and Helsby Rotary Club are supporting the initiative.
