A WARRINGTON woman has been presented with a lifetime achievement award as part of the town’s annual “Young at Heart” awards.
Eileen Fitzgerald (pictured) received her award from Coun Jim Regan at the presentation of the annual WAPOP – Widening Active Participation for Older People – awards at the Pyramid Arts Centre.
She won the award for her tireless work for improving the quality of life for older people through her work at the Older People’s Partnership Group (OPEG) and as an Older Person’s Champion.
The WAPOP awards were launched in 2006 as a celebration of older people’s engagement in learning, volunteering, arts and sport activities in the local area.
They have become known as the “Young at Heart awards” and also celebrate those who work tirelessly with older people’s groups to facilitate and deliver activities for older people.
Award winners on the night were: Sports Award: David Melia (presented by Clive Jones); Arts Award: Len Andrews (presented by Janey Moran); Learning Award: John Paterson (presented by Pat Kitto); Literacy Award: Lillian Astles (presented by Eileen Fitzgerald); Motivation Award: Ellen Flanagan (presented by Coun Keith Bland); Team Award: Learning and Enterprise Centre staff (presented by Coun Liz Smith); Volunteer Award: Norma Rothwell (presented by Coun Roy Smith); Group Award: Warrington Blind Society chair-based exercise class (presented by Clive Jones); Lifetime Achievement Award: Eileen Fitzgerald (presented by Coun Jim Regan).
WAPOP is a council initiative that aims to enhance the quality of life for people aged 50 or more by providing opportunities to be more socially active and to improve health and well-being.
The group is facilitated by the council’s Arts and Sports Engagement Team (ASET) and the Older Peoples Partnership Group (OPEG), NHS Warrington, Select Leisure and Age Concern among others.

  1. Having worked with Eileen in my capacity at WBC, this is a well deserved accolade that is long overdue to a most professional and charismatic lady.
