PUPILS from three Warrington schools are to form a “Shadow Parish Council” to debate local issues in a BBC “Question Time” format.
Great Sankey Parish Council is organising the event at St Gregory’s High School, Great Sankey on Monday, October 12 at 6.30pm.
The three schools involved are St Gregory’s, Great Sankey High and Penketh High.
It is the third time the parish council has organised a “shadow” event as part of Local Democracy Week.
Organiser Coun Allan Bird said: “Each school will have five pupils who will act as shadow parish councillors on the night, reflecting the actual membership of Great Sankey Parish Council, which has 15 members.
“At the start of the evening each school will elect a chairman who will try to keep the debate flowing, allow views from each side and ensure fairness.
“At regular intervals the chairman will change to allow three children the chance to chair a meeting.”
Each school puts forward its own motion for the debate and the other schools oppose it. After the debate there will be a vote.
The Mayor of Warrington, Coun Brian Axcell, is attending the event and will present a trophy to the winning school.
