A string of community clean-up days is helping to bring a sparkle to central Warrington, with volunteers from across the six central wards banding together to make a big difference.
The clean-ups are being driven by the Central 6 Community Forum, part of the wider masterplan for central Warrington, which aims to improve the quality of life for local people, revitalise communities and increase opportunities.
The Central 6 initiative, dubbed ‘Clean 19’, builds on the success of Clean 17 held in Fairfield and Howley in 2017, and extends it across all six wards of central Warrington. The initiative was launched at Whitecross Community Centre earlier this month with support from community volunteers, the Council’s neighbourhoods team, TORUS housing and Cheshire Police.
As well as an opportunity for local volunteers to clean-up neighbourhood areas, the events also feature information about how to improve wellbeing and find out about what’s going on in the wider community.
Cllr Jean Flaherty, chair of the Central 6 Community Forum, said: “We’ve had brilliant engagement from residents so far about the Central 6 area regeneration masterplan. What’s more, to see volunteers in action, with people banding together to make a huge difference to the local area, is validation that people in Warrington’s central wards really care about their communities.
“It won’t stop here. As we continue to hear about what matters most to our residents in the central wards, we will be providing many more opportunities for people to get hands on in their community and make a real difference.”
Executive board member for leisure and community, Cllr Tony Higgins, agreed: “The clean-up events so far have been a roaring success.
“Of course, what would be even better is if people disposed of their waste and litter properly, and recycled what they can – as 9/10 Warrington residents do.
“But what I’ve seen so far from our willing volunteers is a real ‘count me in’ attitude to enhance the look and feel of our communities – which will bring huge benefits to resident wellbeing and pride.”
