FORMER Warrington Wolves’ international Rugby League star Ashton Sims – dropped into LiveWire’s Fit, Fed & Read school holiday scheme – to the delight of local youngsters.

Fiji international Ashton, who played for Warrington before joining the Toronto Wolfpack club and still lives in the town with his family, came along and had lunch with youngsters, spoke about his career and took part in some fun sports activities with them.

He was asked lots of questions by the young people about what it’s like being a professional sportsman and later tweeted it was “great” to see sport putting smiles on children’s faces and “keep up the good work”.

Fit, Fed & Read, for children aged from 7 to 14, aims to provide structured activities and meals for young people during the school holidays, and was held over four days over Easter at Fairfield Old School.

Running from 10am to 3pm, the daily schedule included a family breakfast and nutritious lunch, and activities that included football, orienteering, athletics, art activities and group discussions on topics including personal challenges.

The aim of the Fit, Fed and Read scheme, delivered by LiveWire’s Sports Development Team, is to provide structured provision during the school holidays and promote themes including community safety, physical and mental wellbeing and healthy eating and lifestyle.

Paul Flannery, LiveWire’s Community Sports Development Officer, said: “The Easter Fit, Fed and Read was a fantastic success and the presence of a professional athlete in the shape of Ashton Sims only enhanced what was a great project. Giving the children an opportunity to mix with Ashton and talk about his upbringing and journey in sport was a brilliant addition to the scheme.”
