POLICE and crime commissioner David Keane has been out with officers from Cheshire police to warn people of the dangers of using a mobile phone while driving.
The Warrington-based police chief joined officers from the roads and crime unit social media.
It followed a rise in the number of fatal collisions in Cheshire – with twice the number of people dying on the county’s roads in last year compared to the previous year.
Mr Keane said: “Using a mobile phone while driving is one of the main contributory factors in a fatal collision and drivers using their phone behind the wheel are four times more likely to be involved in a collision.
“But we still continue to see drivers across Cheshire make reckless decisions when they are well aware of the dangers and know they are breaking the law.
“Checking a text message or scrolling through social media is not worth the loss of someone’s life and the heartache that their families suffer from the loss of a loved one.
“It’s important that police and partners work together to make our roads safer and reduce the number of drivers that choose to drive recklessly.”
Motorists caught using a mobile phone behind the wheel can face a £200 fine and six penalty points on their licence. Drivers drivers under the age of 21, could automatically lose their licence.
