Road safety campaign launched

RESIDENTS of one of Warrington busiest roads have been asked to join a campaign for positive action to improve road safety.
People living along the A56 Higher Lane at Lymm have been told an opportunity exists to get action as the road is due to be resurfaced next year and a speed limit review is currently underway.
Higher Lane resident Chris Wakefield has written to all other householders asking them if they would join an action committee, work on suggesting practical solutions to safety problems, lobby local political representatives and encourage others to take action.
The community governor at Lymm High School said: “I have lived here for 30 years and have witnessed the gradual deterioration in the road structure and road behaviour.
“Recently I have become more and more concerned about the speed and disregard shown for others by drivers on this road.
“I see an opportunity for action now as the road is due to be resurfaced next year and there is currently a speed limit review underway. This provides a window of opportunity for us to make our views known and petition for some positive action to be taken to improve the quality and safety of this road.”
Mr Wakefield suggests that high speed traffic on the A56 deters people from making short journeys on foot and that the existing speed limit is ignored by most drivers.
He believes a resurfaced road could lead to increased speeds.
“Should we ask the council to stop and think about engineering safety into the road before they just patch up what we already have?” he asked.
