WARRINGTON and German twin-town Hilden came together to celebrate their long-lasting partnership.
Members of Warrington and Hilden communities met to co-sign the declaration celebrating the 50th anniversary of the partnership
A delegation led by Mayor of Warrington Cllr Karen Mundry and the council Leader Cllr Russ Bowden joined the Mayor of Hilden, Birgit Alkenings and her delegation.
The trip marked the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Partnership Agreement of May 22 1968. The twin towns reiterated their will to continue to co-operate with a particular focus on business interests, culture and music.
Cllr Mundry said: “We are proud of our partnership and I’m delighted that 50 years on we still have a close relationship. We want to continue to give the residents of our towns the opportunity to get to know each other and to share our cultures. ”
Cllr Bowden said: “The partnership between Warrington and Hilden is more important than ever, with current national uncertainty around Brexit. This partnership recognises that we remain committed to continuing our strong friendships with partners across Europe of whom Hilden is one of our most treasured.”
Hilden is a city in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia . With approximately 57,000 inhabitants, it is the fourth largest city in the District of Mettmann.
During the 1960s, the Lancashire Regiment, which was based at Peninsula Barracks in Warrington, was stationed in the Hilden area. Friendships which developed between the soldiers and German families were the basis of the links between the two towns.
