Blue bins first birthday

WARRINGTON’S blue bin recycling initiative is being hailed a great success one year on from its launch.
Since the bigger blue bin scheme was introduced 12 months ago the amount of recyclable waste collected has rocketed.
Almost half of all waste collected in the last three months in the town is now being recycled or composted – 47.2%!
The bigger blue bins mean that glass bottles, cardboard, tins and plastic bottles are now simply and efficiently collected from residents homes.
To mark this amazing achievement and special occasion, the council’s recycling team will be holding a celebration event on Friday September 25 from 11am to 3pm in the town centre.
Staff there will be on hand to answer questions regarding recycling and waste minimisation and will be dishing out birthday cake as well as top tips!
Cllr Alan Litton, executive board member for environment and transport said: “Over the last year, residents have recycled over 15,000 tonnes of waste that would otherwise have gone to landfill, which is a huge environmental saving and a great achievement.
“I would like to thank all those involved in this success and I hope we can move on quickly to cutting further the amount we landfill by recycling even more and focusing on waste minimisation and reuse.”
