WORK to remove Warrington’s Cenotaph while work goes on to stabilise the riverbank is due to start next week.
Following the success of attaining planning and listed building consent, the works to temporarily remove the Cenotaph will commence on Monday (January 7).
The project will focus on the safe removal of the Cenotaph and surrounding features to a secure depot, followed by works to stabilise the river bank and then re-site the Cenotaph in its current location.
Cllr Hans Mundry, executive board member for highways said: “Our objective is to structurally improve the supporting riverbank and wall that is situated to the north of the Cenotaph.
“As part of the scheme we’ll also be upgrading the appearance around the monument, including improvements to paving, lighting and general access.
“The Cenotaph is one of Warrington’s most important and highly valued icons. I am pleased that the work set to start will safeguard it for future generations.”
Off peak lane closures will be in place on most working days between 9.30am – 3.30pm, with some of the larger plant movements and material deliveries taking place during overnight closures or at weekends. It is anticipated there will be some minor disruption to the travelling public during the course of the works.
The works will be complete in order for the Remembrance Sunday service to take place in November 2019.
