BRITAIN’S top planning professional says Warrington town centre has been transformed into a “wonderful and inviting place” over the last 10 years.
Martin Willey, president of the Royal Town Planning Institute, Europe’s largest and most prestigious professional institute for planners, visited Warrington to see the ongoing regeneration initiatives in the town.
He met with representatives of the North West Development Agency and Warrington Borough Council, before visiting the varied regeneration initiatives in the town centre.
He said: “I have not visited Warrington for 10 years and in that time the centre has been transformed into a wonderful and inviting place to attract shoppers and visitors.
“The council must be complemented on their significant and highly successful efforts to change the image of Warrington into a place that I, and many others, will want to visit again and again.”
The RTPI is the largest professional institute for planners in Europe, with more than 22,000 members. As well as promoting spatial planning, RTPI develops and shapes policy affecting the built environment, works to raise professional standards and supports members through continuous education, training and development.

He obviously didn’t see the main streets off the skittles. Bridge street is a disgrace.
Golden Square is only part of the town. It’s ok improving the place, but the rest has to be maintained as well, and this hasn’t happened.
pmsl – absolutely well said silver surfer. I’m sorry – did he go into Bridge Street? Or any of the other streets? Empty shops, charity shops – the only reason I used to go outside Golden Square was to Woolies. We walked through from the market car park a couple of weeks ago and all I could think was “God what a dump”. Bridge Street especially – there’s nothing there. it was inevitable when they extended Golden Square that the rest of the town centre (and shops who couldn’t afford the rates inside the shopping centre) would suffer
