Walled Garden regeneration plan

0

PLANS to regenerate an overgrown walled garden at a former Warrington munitions factory are being investigated.
The Birchwood Partnership, Birchwood Town Council, and Warrington Borough Council are working together to assess the potential regeneration of Oakwood GateWalled Garden as a community space.
As part of this process, they are undertaking an online community consultation to establish if there is a desire within the community to regenerate the space.
In 1939, much of the area in Birchwood was acquired by the Government for the construction of the Risley Royal Ordnance Factory. The area where the main entrance to the Factory was located was, and still is, known as Oakwood Gate.
After WWII much of the site became redundant and was later demolished; however, Reservoir 2 (which was a 50m square, made of reinforced concrete) remained and was acquired in 1968 by the Warrington and Runcorn Development Corporation. In the early 1980s, a ‘Walled Garden’ was created from this space which became a
‘Botanical Interest Garden’ open to the local community.
Although the garden still exists today, many of the ornamental plants that remain have been crowded out by encroaching woodland and weeds, and the area is in need of rejuvenation to provide a community space that Birchwood’s residents and visitors, will be proud of.
The consultation has been circulated at local Birchwood community events such as Birchwood Carnival and Oakwood Fun Day, and has been circulated in the Birchwood Town Council Newsletter. To gather more feedback and responses, the survey is now available online. To take part, please visit:
