A WARRINGTON convenience store caught selling alcohol to underage customers has had its licence revoked.
Warrington’s licensing committee have revoked the licence at Penketh Convenience Store on Warrington Road, Penketh, following investigations by Cheshire Police and the council’s Trading Standards team as part of operation ArcAngel.
Paul Draycott, licensing officer for Cheshire Police said: “Cheshire Police and partners are committed to tackling alcohol related crime and disorder and underage drinking in Warrington.
“We work very closely with licensees to ensure they have the help, support and advice they need. In this case we tried to work with the licensee to solve the problems they were facing. Sadly, problems persisted and we were left with no option but to seek a review of the licence.
“While we do not take these measures lightly, it should serve as a warning to others that if issues are not addressed in the correct way, then we will not hesitate in taking this course of action.”
Val Atherton from the council said: “I hope the results of this hearing send a clear message to other shop keepers – that they must take an active role in ensuring underage sales do not take place on their premises.”
The owner can appeal, if however no appeal is received the decision will come into force in 21 days.
The council, NHS Warrington and Cheshire Police are now working together to ensure that all licensed premises across Warrington are reaching ArcAngel’s acceptable standards. ArcAngel is the brand name for Cheshire Police and its partners’ activity related to alcohol related crime – bringing together all operational, educational and diversionary activity aimed at alcohol fuelled crime, behaviour and incidents.
