Raiders grab council computers

RAIDERS broke into town centre offices used by Warrington Borough Council during the night and stole laptops and other computer equipment.
They gained access to the third floor of the Quattro building, in Buttermarket Street, by climbing a fire escape.
Some staff fear laptops containing sensitive information, including details of a staff re-evaluation currently being carried out, have been stolen.
But a council spokeswoman said an inventory of what had been taken was still being compiled.
She added: “If any laptops or other computer equipment has been stolen, all of our equipment is password protected and in the case of sensitive information, usually encrypted.
“In any case, information such as staff records or evaluation data would be stored automatically on the servers and not on individual PCs or laptops and this information would not be accessible remotely.
“The risk of any personal information being accessed or used is extremely low.
“We are working closely with Cheshire Police and the building manager to review our security procedures.”

  1. It’s not the WBC to blame, but the theives, who should be caught and punished, this should be easy considering the amount of CCTV around the town, but I will not hold my breath!

  2. Always thought WBC had CCTV inside all THEIR buildings too so shouldn’t be too difficult to at least get images of the culprets.

As for computers being secure…. many council / hospital/school/business pc’s etc are sold at auction when they are replaced. They are wiped clean first of course….. but specialist software can easily retrieve masses of the so called ‘deleted’ data password protected, encrypted or not.

Nothing like a hammer throught the hard drive is what I say !!!!
