Golden couple's cancer research boost

A COUPLE who have faced cancer asked people to give donations to Cancer Research rather than buying them Golden Wedding gifts.
And so far friends and family of Peter and Margaret Farrington have raised more than £1,000.
The couple, of Twiss Green Lane, Culcheth, celebrated with family and friends at Culcheth Sports and Social Club.
They had a live band playing to recreate the atmosphere of the 1950s. And Peter, now 72, who was previously in a harmonica band, played the mouth organ for a couple of tunes.
The couple originally met with friends in Wigan and Leigh, where they went dancing. Their romance blossomed and they were married at Hob Hey Independent Methodist Church.
Peter was then in London with the Army for 12 months completing his national service, and then worked as a sign writer and coach painter in Leigh. Margaret worked in Leigh making shirts and pyjamas for Marks and Spencers.
Margaret, now 71 has always lived in Twiss Green Lane – their home is just a few yards from where she was born.
Several years ago, Margaret had breast cancer -a type which could not be detected by self-examination and was only revealed by a mammogram.
Once detected she was offered swift treatment and the couple want to advise others to get tested. They had “a rough few months”, said Peter, but are now enjoying life to the full.
The couple, who have three sons a daughter and eight grandchildren, have enjoyed their life together. Peter enjoys gardening and his wife likes reading.
“We were brought up to work at marriage and we have pulled together. Our family lives nearby and we have a strong family life,” said Peter.
“We are really grateful to family and friends for their support and donations.”
