WARRINGTON will honour those who have fallen in war, at a Remembrance Sunday ceremony marking a significant milestone for the UK.
The annual event, at the Cenotaph, Bridge Foot, has particular significance this year, as it falls on the centenary of the end of the First World War.
The Mayor of Warrington, war veterans, religious leaders and members of the armed forces will take part in the ceremony.
Members of the public are being invited to attend the event, and unite in remembrance of all those who lost their lives in wartime.
The schedule for the ceremony is as follows:
- 10.20am:The parade will set off from Warrington Town Hall and make its way to the Cenotaph via Springfield Street; Palmyra Square South; Suez Street; Ryland Street; Bridge Street and onto the Cenotaph at approximately 10.30am
- 10.59am:The service will begin at the war memorial with the sounding of the ‘Last Post’ and the laying of the first wreath by the Mayor
- 11am:Warrington will observe the national two minute silence, marked by a bugler. Immediately following the silence, the Cenotaph service will commence, led by Rev. Paul Wilson
- 11.25am approx:The parade will reform and return to the Town Hall
Following the ceremony, a special ‘Blighty Club’ will take place at the Pavilion, Bank Park, near to Warrington Town Hall. Beginning at 12 noon and running through to 3pm, the Blighty Club is one of a number of across the borough, re-created to commemorate the 100-year anniversary of the end of World War I.
Blighty Clubs were established across Britain at the end of the war as an invaluable place for returning soldiers to meet, play cards, reminisce and enjoy music.
Mayor of Warrington, Cllr Karen Mundry, said: “It’s vital that we never forget those who have lost their lives during times of conflict. Remembrance Sunday gives us the opportunity to come together to honour all those who have sacrificed so much, and to make sure their memory lives on.
“This year is, of course, a particularly significant one, as we mark the centenary of the end of the First World War. I would urge the people of Warrington to join our remembrance ceremony, so that, together, we may remember all those who have fallen in war.”
Members of the public who wish to attend the Remembrance Sunday ceremony are asked to access and exit the Cenotaph via the marked crossing points and arrive by 10.45am, prior to the civic party taking their positions at the cenotaph.
Delays around the Bridge Foot area are expected, as all movement of traffic around the Cenotaph will be controlled under a robust traffic management plan.
