Town taste defeat

WARRINGTON Town tasted defeat for the first time in their pre-season friendlies as they were out played by a stronger Witton Albion.
The game took a time to get going as both sides found defence their strong point in the opening ten minutes. Town came close on eleven minutes when Martin Smeatin forced Witton’s keeper into a save that rebounded back off the cross bar.
The Witton keeper again came to the rescue in blocking a long range shot although quite how much he knew about it remains a mystery.
The breakthrough goal for the visiotrs was as simple as they get. A corner was casually knocked in from close range was not defended as the ball found the back of the net.
For the remainder of the half Town were on the back foot with Richard Mottram more than living up to his player of the year award to produce a couple of fine saves.
Town were glad to hear the half time whistle and could have no complaints about trailing to a superior Witton side.
The second half was only two minutes in when Witton doubled their lead. A cross from the right was met at the far post and unchallenged was headed home.
Town’s Steve Williams showed some promise in taking defenders on but the end product eluded him. It became 3-0 following a penalty as the Witton striker was tripped up in the box.
The final quarter when manager Joey Dunn brought on his key players, saw Town start to compete and long range efforts from Chris Gahgan and Mike Grogan were the closest they came to a goal. After the game Dunn said he was “not too bothered” with the result as it counted for nothing.
“Witton are a good team who competed in the Unibond Premier last season and they have a had a couple of tough pre-season friendlies under their belt.
“We trialed a few new players and had some key players missing so I am not too bothered about the result.”
